Clarie Kelley's Hoot Owl Cookies

Bear's Anecdote - Years ago, Bear's mother sent Jodie and Bear a box of recipes. Here is one from the box. These were always a halloween favorite!

    Dough Making
  1. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
  2. Set aside dry ingredients.
  3. Cream butter and sugar.
  4. Blend in egg and vanilla.
  5. Beat well.
  6. Melt baking chocolate.
  7. Add dry ingredients into egg mixture and mix well.
  8. Remove 2/3rds of the dough to flour board.
  9. Stir soda into chocolate.
  10. Blend chocolate into remaining dough.
  11. Chill for 1/2 to 1 hr.
    Rolling the Dough
  1. Roll out half of light dough into a 10x4-inch strip.
  2. Shape half of dark dough into log.
  3. Put dark log onto center of light dough strip.
  4. Wrap the light dough around the dark dough.
  5. Wrap dough in aluminum foil.
  6. Repeat wrapping process with remaining halves of dough.
  7. Chill for 2 hours or overnight.
    Making Owls
  1. Slice dough 1/8 to 1/4-inch thick.
  2. Put two slices adjacent to each other on greased baking sheet.
  3. Pinch upper corner of each slice to form ears.
  4. Add chocolate chip to each slice for eyes.
  5. Add cashew half for beak.
  6. Repeat with remaining dough.
  7. Bake cookies at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes.
  8. Immediately remove from baking sheet to towel to cool.
